Can you help us?

As part of it’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) for Leeds covering 2009 - 2017, LCC included the following improvements in our parish;

Improvement of the existing verges along King Lane (between Alwoodley Lane to Five Lane Ends and on to Arthington Road) for walking, building new adopted footways where appropriate; this has a high priority and estimated budget of £150 000+.

The Leeds Country Way and the Meanwood Valley Trail both follow King Lane in part. The work is required for road safety

LCC has recently reneged on this commitment, citing economic cutbacks as the reason. They have now suggested that the cost would be over £600 000. This is four times their original estimate! We have seen elsewhere that often Local Council estimates and costings can be unrealistically high when compared to the commercial sector bids for the same work.

We believe that this well used section of pathway, for which there is no alternative, is a vital link between Alwoodley and the countryside, being a part of the Leeds Country Way and the Meanwood Valley Trail. We also recognise its dangerous condition and that it is in desperate need of improvement.

We want to prepare a plan that we believe would be more realistically costed and that we can use to approach LCC with a view to negotiating a change of mind. There are also legal steps we can take, especially since LCC recognise that there is a safety issue involved.

In order to generate a creditable proposal we need qualified advice.

If you are a Civil Engineer or otherwise suitably qualified to help us prepare our proposal and are willing to offer your time and expertise pro bono, as a contribution to the improvement of our community then we would be very happy to hear from you!

“For a secret gem of a nursery in rural north Leeds- they have a wide range of flowering stock. I have never bought anything there in ten years which has failed. Good herbs and friendly people too.”
