Latest news about the garage on King Lane!

The Developer hopes to have the shop open by Christmas! The garage has gone and the ground is being levelled. We are negotiating with the developer about the (free) provision of visual improvements and traffic control measures around the shops

What you think . . .

I am very torn on this. Whilst I am not happy about this scheme going ahead, I feel that something needs to be done urgently to the site in question. However, if the scheme goes ahead I do not want to see the surrounding businesses become derelict as has happened so often when major businesses such as Tesco have moved in. There has been enough deterioration in this area over the past couple of years in antisocial behaviour by a minority, not always locally based. . . . They would have to police the behaviour of their clients very carefully so that the area retains the peaceful ambience which we all enjoy. They talk about adequate off site parking in the surrounding area. This is clearly nonsense. I live in King Drive which is constantly parked on both sides, despite the recent police notices, and the road is already used as a ratrun at all times of the day and night. The speeds of some of the drivers is ridiculous for safety and I would hate to think that this could become worse. Also deliveries late at night or early in the morning would be unacceptable.

I agree that a Tesco express would be useful to the community on the proviso that it had a community focus such as a post office and local notices etc. Parking would be a considerable concern and if this is not thought out carefully and contributes to congestion then the development should not go ahead.

Although an independent trader would be desirable, Tesco’s proposal will significantly improve the areas amenities.

We do not feel that the other shops by their nature apart from Costcutter will be affected by this application. . . .  We think a Tesco would enhance the viability of existing shops on this parade

The parade is looking very bad & does not enhance the environment. The present shops would benefit from more shoppers to the parade. . . . I would use Tesco.

This would not only be convenient for elderly people & non drivers but looking at the building in its present state it looks to be in a very dilapidated state (eyesore) but very dangerous

. . . The site definitely needs developing and something like this would be a welcome return to the 1960's when the Co-Op was round the corner where the vacant unit is now.

. . . A Tesco express would be a welcome addition to the area!

Would benefit many people who can't or don't want to drive further afield. We need a "village shop".

That parade and the one opposite has already lost enough small businesses (PO, greengrocer, butcher) because of Sainsbury's. A further chain supermarket would take custom from the baker and small general store. Yes, a Tesco Express would be handy, but at what cost? I used to live above the shops on King Lane, and have watched local shops suffer.

I'm fully in favour. I find the parking already a problem at the local shops with selfish people parking across pavements. Why should Tesco be singled out as contributing to a problem which is already there. There is also the option of local people walking to the shops if they object so much. Also, do we have any viable alternate plans for the site, or would we rather have the deserted garage there as an eyesore?

(The) present building is a danger and unsightly. A national company like Tesco would probably be the only business to take this on and there is limited opportunity for a different type of store

I believe that a Tesco Express located in Alwoodley would be a positive asset to

our community.

I am fully in favour of 'Tesco' developing the site. I also think that 'Leeds City Council' should take the initiative and make any planning agreement subject to 'Tesco' having some local Post Office functions within store, such as pension payments and other small transactions. This would be of great benefit to the elderly and non drivers of the community.

Please do this -please install a 24/7 cash point there too

Please do this - please build this Tesco

(with (a) cash point)

If it had a cash point and post office facilities then it would be doubly welcome and save me having to drive to Rounday/Horsforth or even Seacroft to get my Tesco points

I am against this for a number of reasons.

I think it is needed the nearest other convenience store is the One Stop right at the other side of Alwoodley/Shadwell.

This development will improve the environment and offer a quality value for money service not current available in the vicinity. Look forward to it

There used to be a greengrocers and a butchers on the parade. Now there is nowhere within a reasonable walking distance to buy fresh produce.

On principle I'd rather not see Tesco opening yet another store to kill off local small businesses, however, our existing shops on King Lane are very poor and though I would prefer to see a Co-operative supermarket in Alwoodley, Tesco would be helpful to me.

It would create more traffic on an already busy road (King lane). I live on The Avenue and believe it would increase the traffic on this road also.

excellent proposal that removes the current eye sore and gives more choice to local residents. The cash point will be an added bonus.

As long as there is adequate parking on site

long overdue.

Tesco is a monster destroying local shops all over the country
