Newsletter - January 2010

Hello Alwoodley! – our first  newsletter of 2010 and despite not being able to do much practical work

over December and January, there is much to report . . .

Funds

- we have been successful in obtaining funds from LCC Community Fund and have applied to the Parish Council for a donation to fund plant purchases etc for the coming year.

The Avenue

- junction of The Drive and The Avenue shops -prior to the ice and snow, we arranged for half tub displays on the shopping parade at the top of The Avenue.

Junction of King Lane and The Avenue shops

- Half tubs sited - these have stood up to the frost and snow quite well but we are tidying them up and in may current plants will be replaced with summer bedding.

The corner bed display near the shops

- This has suffered a little with the weather but the plants will pick up and we will be replacing any that are beyond redemption. This bed has suffered from parked cars encroaching on the borders of the bed and we would ask everyone to be aware that this is a new flower bed and needs to be carefully nurtured to maturity

King Lane/Buckstones

- Hopefully we will shortly see some signs of the daffodils planted in the autumn on the green space along King Lane

Nursery Lane

- Plans to have summer displays on railings along Nursery Lane and a new flower bed near the water tower at the end of Nursery Lane.

Primley Parks

- We would welcome any suggestions for suitable planting sites from residents in the Primley Parks.

Wentworths/Sunningdales/Turnberrys/Birkdales

- Summer displays on railings on Nursery Lane in the vicinity of the Brodetsky School. Again, we would welcome our suggestions for possible planting sites.

We will be extremely busy planting and maintaining existing displays in the Summer.

We welcome suggestions and help from representatives from all the areas in the Parish.

Why not join us at an open meeting to be held as follows:

Our most recent project (before the Winter!)

What? We’ve planted 3,500 daffodil bulbs . . .

Where? . . .along the road edge of the green area in front of the Buckstones.  We began at the start of the parish boundary which is just beyond the pedestrian crossing and just before Nursery Lane.

The display finishes opposite the parade of shops on King Lane.

We were delighted that whilst digging over the first plot and planting up we had many positive comments from passers by and even an unsolicited £5 donation.

It’s very clear that the work has been much appreciated.
