February 2010

You should by now have seen our noticeboards which have finally arrived and been installed. There are five in all and they’re sited on the side of the ACA building on The Avenue, on King Lane by Saphersons Carpet shop, in the grounds of Leeds Seventeen on Nursery Lane, at the top end of Primley Park View by the Shell Garage and in the New Inn at Eccup. They contain contact details, dates of meeting and surgeries, agendas and minutes of our meetings together with information about forthcoming events.

We are delighted to announce that we have a venue for the Farmer’s Market – Leeds Seventeen. The first market will have taken place by the time you receive this, but we hope that many of you saw the posters and flyers advertising it. Future markets will be held on the second Sunday of each month between 9am – 12noon beginning on Sunday 14th February.

Following requests for street lighting on the footpath which runs between Far Moss and Sunningdale Green across the old golf course, we have had two on-site meetings with the Ward Councillors, representatives from the Parks and the Highways Depts. and the ACA. The Parks Dept are not responsible for street lighting, but have agreed to have the overhanging vegetation cut back and cleared off the path and they will also sweep the path. They can’t give a firm date for when this work will be carried out as it is very waterlogged and it needs to dry out before machinery can be brought on to the site. The Highways Dept is unable to provide lighting at the moment as the path is “unadopted”. Cllr Harrand has suggested finding out whether the path can be adopted so that there is a possibility that lighting can be installed.

Another matter of concern mentioned by residents is the amount of HGVs on King Lane, particularly on the stretch between The Avenue and Alwoodley Lane. After we raised this matter with the Highways Dept. they carried out a survey in August. Unfortunately they consider that the number of HGVs recorded in the survey is relatively low and therefore does not warrant weight restrictions being introduced. We very strongly disagree with their conclusion and are contacting them again.

We are very pleased that our request for extra grit bins has been granted, but more are needed throughout the Parish and the existing ones should be refilled regularly during bad weather. Repeated requests from residents for the Council to refill the bins have not been successful and this is something that we are pursuing with the Council. We realise, of course, that this winter has been exceptionally bad and grit supplies have been very limited as a result and we trust that contingency plans will be put in place for next winter. Tempting though it is to use the grit for our drives, there is more chance of persuading the Council to provide more if the grit is used, as intended, for the roads and therefore the benefit of all.

There should also be an inaugural meeting in late February to set up the Alwoodley Parish Walking Group; details will be displayed on our noticeboards and those people who have been in touch and left their phone numbers will be contacted.

December 2009

Firstly, the Alwoodley in Bloom Group have planted an amazing 3,500 bulbs!! We are looking forward to a wonderful display in the spring.

We have already assisted in the setting up of several Neighbourhood Watch groups in the Parish and hope that more will follow. More people are needed to act as Co-ordinators for their street and if you are interested please contact us and we will be happy to arrange for you to meet an experienced Co-ordinator who can explain what is involved.  There would be no obligation on your part. See our website page www.alwoodleyparishcouncil.org/nw.html for more information.

We are looking for a Lengthsman or Parish caretaker are advertising this position locally on our noticeboards and on the website here, but if you or someone you know is interested please contact us.

Some residents have drawn our attention to the fact that when the new lampposts were installed the dog fouling notices that were on the original ones have not been replaced.  We have contacted the appropriate department at Leeds City Council and asked them to deal with this.

Leeds City Council have just published the Rights of Way Improvement Plan for 2009-2017 and one of the items that directly affects the Parish is improvement of the existing verges along King Lane for walking, building new adopted footways where appropriate; this has a high priority. More information can be found on on the website here
