We were told that a 5% return rate would be good

and that 10% would be considered excellent . . .

In fact 27% of the households in our Parish cared enough to reply!

We asked to choose up to three issues from seven we identified in a preliminary questionnaire at the ACA Gala this Summer. You also had the chance to tell us about other issues or wishes you want us to help with.

The data we received covers over 400 A4 pages (if printed out)

- and that is without the analysis tables and charts!

every comment has been recorded

Here is a summary of the information you sent us! The data is presented as summary tables. You can click on one of the following underlined word to jump straight to that analysis

Gender - % response rate by gender

Area - % response rate by area (splitting the Parish into its main areas (e.g. Alwoodley Park, the Primleys))

Issue Choice - (% of people who chose a particular “tick box” option)

Other issues - (the other issues raised including suggestions for improvements)

Area Issues - (% of people who chose a particular “tick box” option in each of the areas)

Update on our plans - this section will become more detailed as we complete the full analysis and begin tackling issues

Golf” consists of  the Sunningdales, Birkdales, Turnberrys & Wentworths.

The weighted percentage response rate by area has been calculated by taking the number of households in each area into account;  For example 23% of the households in the Alwoodley Park area responded.

The unknown percentage is calculated from the total households in the Parish (around 4000). However, it is valid to assume that the proportional response rate for anonymous replies will be similar to the others (i.e. Between  15% and 30% for each area)

The percentages are calculated from the total number of survey returns and since each person had up to 3 choices, they don't add up to 100%!

Traffic includes inconsiderate parking at shops,

on verges, on pavements, rat-running, speeding, school pick up/drop off and the state of the roads.

Footpaths responses were sometimes hijacked for made up paths plus comments about overhanging garden trees!

.  .  .  so Neighbourhood Watch support

(single issue) romps home!

Other Issues

Many people used the extra issues space to illustrate specific examples of “tick box” issues. Other raised genuinely different issues with some suggesting solutions, many of which were very practical and full of common sense! Some people mentioned a single issue whilst others listed several.

Because there were so many different issues raised, and hence percentages responses for issues are low, the analysis of this section will be more descriptive. Where percentages are quoted they represent the percentage of the 700 or so comments, (divided into twenty categories) that we received. As one might expect, most comments raised problems but some made suggestions for improving local amenities. So, problems first . . .

Traffic problems came out top at the top with

1: illegal or inconsiderate parking (19% = 1 in 5) - this includes parking so as to block pavements, parking at the shops, parking during school drop-offs and pick-ups and parking on verges

2: poor state road surfaces (19% = 1 in 5)

3: speeding (13% = 1 in 6)

Also mentioned are sheer volume of traffic at certain times and roads in the “Golfs” used as rat-runs

Pedestrian issues came a close second (overhanging garden trees, state of footpaths and the amount of dog muck left around)

General atmosphere: The general poorly cared for state of the playground, litter, lack of leaf clearance in Autumn and poor quality verge cutting all add up to a feeling of shabbiness in the area.

A number of people requested that the Parish Council “kept an eye on” or even “blocked” planning applications, especially the building of Apartments and Flats on single house sites.

Many are unhappy with the dilapidated state of some unoccupied houses and particularly the old “Alwoodley Garage” on King Lane

We did get one mention of street drug dealing in the Wentworths!

Now on to suggestions for improvements . . .

Request for social areas, such as coffee shops/icecream parlour, facilities for young people (who, at present, have to meet on the streets and groups of young people can be quite intimidating for some), more safe facilities for young children (a renovated, cleaned and safe playground, toddler groups (perhaps more advertising of the present groups might help, unless they are all full!))

What the Council is doing with the information

The full analysis has been completed - we delivered a summary of the survey by hand to every household and invited everyone to the Annual Parish Meeting to find out more or contribute.

We had a public meetings with the Police to help set up or revitalise Neighbourhood Watch groups

- contact PC Musgrave for details about joining or starting a scheme. The Council has decided to support the creation of groups since PC Muscroft is very busy making it hard for individuals to create a group by themselves.

See here for details

Inspector Andrew Briggs of the Roundhay, Alwoodley and Moortown Neighbourhood Policing Team came on 2nd Feb to give a very comprehensive presentation. His team has distributed leaflets in the area  which introduced them and also provide contact telephone numbers.

Resurfacing work on the middle stretch of The Avenue has been completed

We organised a public meeting for everyone who expressed an interest in Alwoodley in Bloom or planting flowers and bulbs to improve our environment. The group has taken off and has completed several projects already
